The MOE Key Laboratory of ParticlePhysicsand Particle Irradiation wasbuilt uponShandong Universityandits first-rate discipline of particle physics and nuclear physics.
Theparticle physicsinShandong Universityhas a longhistory, which can bedating back to 1930 when the School of Physicswelcomedits first teacherWANG Pu at its establishment. As a nuclear physicist andthestudent of LiseMeitner, Wang haslaid the groundwork for the founding of the particle and nuclear physicsduring his time at the University. In 1958,Wang hostedthe National Workshop on Particle Physics and Nuclear Physics in Qingdao. This workshopwaswell known asthefirst endeavor to popularizequantum field theory in China, and marked the beginning of anation-wideeffort toconductresearch into the theoretical aspects of particle physics.
In 1981,Shandong Universitywasthe first university in China which wasgiven the authority to offer doctoral degreesin high energy physics. In 1984, it awarded the first doctoral degreeofhigh energy physicsin China.
The research direction of particle irradiationwas pioneered byAcademician WANGKeming, who wonthesecond-classprize of National Natural Science Awardsin 2005 and was electedAcademician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007.
Theconstruction of theMOE Key Laboratory of Particle Physics and Particle Irradiation was ratified by the National Ministry of Education in December 2010 and passed acceptance inspection in November 2013. It was one of the 26 laboratories designated by the Ministry of Education as MOE key laboratories for 2010 following a series of recommendations and assessments as stipulated in the official documenttoexaminehow well they fit into thestrategic plans of the country and the direction in which science is headed, withan aimtoserve the greater cause ofbuildingworld-leading research intensive universities, acceleratingthe formation ofhigher educationinnovation systems and optimizingthe existing layout of MOE key laboratories.
TheMOE Key Laboratoryof Particle Physics and Particle Irradiationis rooted in the strengths of the national key discipline of particle physics and nuclear physics of Shandong University and has directed great resources toward the inquiry into keyquestions facing particle physics and particle irradiation. Areas of research expertise include elementary particle physics, particle detection technology, software platform for particle physics andparticle irradiation effects on materials. In 2018, a newresearchdirection of space particle and radiation detection was set up to incorporate particle detector technology with space detection. It is hoped that through the successful operation of the lab, it could positively impact the development of the physics discipline of Shandong University and stimulate further progress on scientific research and talent cultivation, which will arguably elevate the University’s academic reputation around the globe.
