The lab, with particle physicsasits core, is dedicated to intensive research on theoriesandexperiments inparticle physics and in-depth exploration of detection technology to foster cutting-edge scientific and technological progress. It also works to facilitate the adoption of particle physics experimental technology in a wider range of fields to promote interdisciplinary studies and the development of science and technology in China. The idea is to make the lab a high-class platform that enables scientific research, technological development and talent training across particle physics and inter-disciplinary fields.
Currently, the director is Prof. LIANG Zuotang, Chang Jiang Scholar. The chairof the Academic Committee is WU Yueliang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Theresearchin the lab isorganized around fivedirections- particle physics, software and computation platform, particle detector technology, particle-matter interactions, and thespacedetection ofparticle and radiation. The academic leaders for thosedirectionsare respectively, Prof. SI Zongguo, Prof. HUANG Xingtao, Prof. WANG Meng, Prof. WANG Xuelin and Prof. CHEN Yao.
There are four experimental platforms builtinthe lab.
(1)The Platform of Particle Detection Technologies
The main focus of the platform is to design, construct and run performance tests on new and traditional types of particle detectors. It serves as a strong R&D and technical assistance provider for particle physics experiments where its capacity is needed.
(2)The Platform of Ion Beam Application
The platform is mainly usedforthe modification of optical materials, theinvestigation ofradiation damages innuclearenergymaterials by ion beam technology andfordesign and characterization of new micro/nano structuresin materials. The ion beam implantationplatformisconnectedwith alowtomedium energy accelerator, which can beusedfor researchand applicationin photonics, information science, nanomaterials and nuclearenergymaterials.
(3)The Platform of Radiation Detection Materials
The platform undertakes the exploration of new radiation detection materials and the testing of their properties to underpin the development of particle detectors and the application of accelerator material modification. The research effort is focused primarily on scintillators and semiconductors and how the latter can be used to build radiation detection devices with high sensitivity and rapid response.
(4)The Platform ofData Processing Software and Intensive Computing Technology
Themain research area of this platform is to design and develop data processing software for particle physics research, based on advanced mathematical methods, computing, information processing and network technologies, to improve and accelerate the data processing process for particle physics experiments, to propose and develop Monte Carlo methods and technologies for the simulation of the real processes of particle physics, as well as to develop new technologies and methods for acquiring, transmitting, storing, and processing particle physics experimental data.
