报告摘要

Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the correct theory of Strong Interactions, is perhaps the richest part of the Standard Model. It will need to be developed much further, both as a source of background in searches for new physics and on its own. Seemingly simple questions, such as what role do gluons play in determining the spin of protons and neutrons as of yet do not have satisfactory quantitative answers despite the impressive progress made with existing facilities at CERN, DESY, JLab, and RHIC. This talk will discuss the status of and prospects with the proposed Electron-Ion Collider in the U.S. in this context.

报告人简介:

Dr. Ernst Sichtermann earned his MSc from Utrecht University (1994) and PhD from Free University (2001) in The Netherlands. After postdoctoral research at Yale University (2001-2003), he joined Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2003, where he is presently a senior scientist. His main scientific research interests concern spin and the structure of nucleons. He has made deep-inelastic scattering measurements at CERN, pursued the muon anomalous magnetic moment at BNL, and is currently performing measurements with the STAR experiment at RHIC and preparing the case for a future Electron Ion Collider. He once served as co-convener of spin working group and deputy spokesperson in the STAR experiment at RHIC.
